Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that cell phone coverage in underground subway stations will be available a full year ahead of schedule, with all four carriers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, present across underground stations as of Monday, January 9. In addition, Wi-Fi has been installed in underground stations a full two years ahead of schedule. The MTA’s early delivery was in response to the Governor’s directive at the beginning of 2016 to accelerate the project.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo debuted the new Second Avenue Subway station at 86th Street on December 30, 2016. The Governor also announced that a new entrance to the subway has opened at 63rd Street and 3rd Avenue, enabling MTA customers to begin accessing the F Subway line immediately, and the Second Avenue Subway Q Subway Train when service begins at Noon on Sunday, and unveiled the new artwork at the station.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all lane closures related to routine maintenance and temporary construction work for the New Year’s Eve weekend, through the end of the morning rush on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, to accommodate motorists traveling throughout the weekend. Exceptions are the ongoing Fast Track Sandy Restoration work at the Queens Midtown Tunnel and at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel. At least one lane in each direction will always remain open at both tunnels. Motorists can ease their trip by using E-ZPass.

Ring in 2017 with Metro-North! The railroad is offering expanded service to and from Grand Central Terminal all day long on December 31 and into the early morning hours of New Year's Eve for celebrants traveling to Times Square and other spots in the Big Apple. Metro-North reminds customers that drinking alcohol on trains and at our stations is banned from noon New Year's Eve until noon New Year's Day. If traveling after midnight on New Year’s Eve, customers should buy tickets in advance. On the night of New Year’s Eve, tickets will be collected prior to boarding trains at Grand Central Terminal.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is ready to usher in the New Year with extra train service for the extended holiday weekend, beginning with additional eastbound trains to accommodate customers leaving work early on Friday, December 30. Then the railroad will run additional westbound trains on Saturday, New Year’s Eve, for revelers heading to the city to celebrate, and extra service early New Year’s Day to get the party goers safely back home Sunday morning.

The lighting, which is intended to complement the grandeur of Grand Central Terminal, will enhance the ability of nighttime pedestrians anywhere along 42nd Street to find their way to Grand Central at a glance.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo debuted the new station at 96th Street on December 22, 2016, in advance of the historic, on-time opening of the Second Avenue Subway. At the event, the Governor invited New Yorkers to an open house for a preview tour of the station, which features high ceilings, column-free design, vibrant lighting, and world-class contemporary artwork. The open house marks the first time the public will have access to the Second Avenue Subway since the start of construction. The words "Excelsior" and "E Pluribus Unum" – New York’s message to people who ride the subways in New York – are displayed on the beams inside of the station.

The MTA has announced some holly jolly schedules for the upcoming long holiday weekend. Also for holiday travelers, as part of the Port Authority’s measures to alleviate roadway congestion at LaGuardia Airport during the Peak Holiday Travel Rush, the MTA’s LaGuardia Link Q70 Select Bus Service will be fare free on Thursday, December 22, and Friday, December 23. The LaGuardia Link provides non-stop service linking the main terminals of the airport (Terminals B, C and D) with New York City Subway hub at Jackson Heights (with connections to the 7, e, f, m, and r lines) and the Long Island Rail Road hub in Woodside, Queens.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is adding 13 trains to its regular eastbound afternoon schedule from Penn Station on Friday, December 23, to accommodate the large number of customers leaving work early to get a head start on their holiday weekend. The additional service from Penn Station will be provided between 12:43 p.m. and 3:41 p.m. on the Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Far Rockaway branches. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced high-speed open road, cashless tolling will be completed on all MTA-operated bridges and tunnels in the New York metropolitan region by the end of 2017, with automatic tolling beginning at the Hugh L. Carey and Queens Midtown Tunnels next month. The state will also deploy 150 State Troopers beginning in January at MTA bridges and tunnels to enhance security at key checkpoints, bolster counter-terrorism efforts and hold scofflaws accountable.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the installation of more than 12,600 new in-car subway maps and approximately 1,000 large station maps featuring the new Second Avenue Subway line. In preparation for the on-time arrival of the Second Avenue Subway on December 31, installation of the new maps featuring the route on the system’s 6,300 cars began over the weekend. The inaugural ride on the Second Avenue Subway will be on December 31 and revenue service will begin at noon on January 1.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has unveiled the largest permanent public art installation in New York State history in conjunction with the grand opening of Phase I of the Second Avenue Subway. The Second Avenue Subway marks the city’s first major expansion project in more than 50 years, with three new handicap-accessible stations along Second Avenue at 96th Street, 86th Street and 72nd Street, and new entrances to the existing Lexington Av/63rd Street Station at 63rdStreet and Third Avenue. The Governor made the announcement at The Museum of Modern Art.
