What began in 2003 with the creation of New York City’s only maritime high school has blossomed into a region-wide ecosystem restoration and environmental education effort. The Billion Oyster Project aims to plant one billion oysters in New York Harbor by 2035 and in the process teach thousands of students and citizens about the Hudson River estuary. In that way, this newest initiative of the New York Harbor Foundation is fulfilling the original promise of the Harbor School.

Since its launch in April 2014, the Billion Oyster Project has exceeded our expectations: in achieving its restoration goals; in enlisting school, restaurant and nonprofit partners; in telling our story in the media; and in partnering with government. This massive growth has been spectacular to witness and we have already begun to deliver on all five aspects of BOP: 1) oyster production, 2) reef construction and monitoring, 3) shell collection, 4) teacher training and curriculum development, and 5) public engagement.
