The Gainesville-based artist brings his introspective thoughts to light in sophomore album.
Jordan Burchel isn’t afraid to shy away from the personal — or the bizarre. On his sophomore album Vowel Sounds, Burchel sings about the vulnerability of love, the temptation to forget his past and becoming friends with the self-loathing voices in his head. It has some superb production, too: the electroacoustic wanderings on songs like “Blesh” and “Why They Call You Blue” are larger than life.
And then there’s "Constants," a particularly intimate song that highlights Burchel’s rich, melodious vocals.
“This song is about a good love, a redeeming love,” says Burchel to Myspace.
“In it, I’m marveling at the fact that I’ve made myself so vulnerable and gotten hurt. It’s not explicitly in the song, but when I’m singing it, it’s a thank you note to the person who is giving me so much love, and a promise that I’ll return it. It was important to me to admit somewhere that I was terrified by the prospect of opening myself up to someone again. Much like 'Why They Call You Blue,' I’m trying to admit my discomfort but move forward anyways.”
