The most effective way to reduce waste is to avoid creating it in the first place. The process of making a new product creates carbon pollution. As a result, reduction and reuse are the most effective ways you can save natural resources, protect the environment, and save money.
Ever heard the old refrain, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure? Instead of discarding unwanted appliances, tools, or clothes, try selling or donating them. Not only will you be reducing waste, you’ll be helping others.

Primary prevention, to use a term from medicine, is not to create waste. Secondary prevention is taking waste produced and reusing it, the longer the better.
Of course primary prevention is best. Why don’t all official agencies NARROW THE MARGINS on ALL documents. This would prevent incalculable waste. It wouldn’t be created—more space on the page, less waste. Why don’t governmental agencies lead the way by doing this themselves, and work with private agencies to allow documents, like PDF, to be adjusted to make narrower margins?
