ESPAÑOLA, N.M. – Bobber the Water Safety Dog joined District staff from Abiquiu Lake as they got in the holiday spirit and participated in the annual Christmas Light Parade to promote water safety, Dec. 10, 2016. Park manager John Mueller said they had “500 direct contacts and spread an uncountable amount of water-safety related Christmas cheer!”

Image Not FoundUSACE Archaeological Field School Re-Dig at Abiquiu NMFrom May 22 to June 25, 2016, eight undergraduate students from the University of Oklahoma got their hands dirty re-excavating the Native American Palisade Ruin, northwest of Espanola NM. The site is located on US Army Corps of Engineers (ABQ District)-managed land. They were participating in a five-week archaeological field school designed to teach them how to do actual archaeological field work. Field schools like this one on Corps-managed land are unusual across the Corps.
Image Not FoundChange of Command Ceremony 2016-ABQ District-USACEALBUQUERQUE N.M. – Lt. Col. James Booth assumed command of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Albuquerque District, May 12, 2016, during a formal change of command ceremony at the District headquarters. The purpose of a change of command ceremony is to emphasize the continuity of leadership and unit identity, despite the change in individual authority. The District’s area of responsibility includes the entire state of New Mexico, as well as portions of southern Colorado and far west Texas. The District performs design, construction and operations and maintenance services for three Air Force bases; conducts a robust civil works program; and operates and maintains nine dams.
Image Not Found2016 STEM Olympiad-UNM-ABQ DistrictAn ABQ District-USACE-STEM team supported the 2016 Central New Mexico Science Olympiad at the University of New Mexico, Jan. 30. At the event, sixteen high school level teams from central NM area schools, participated in the STEM-Wright Stuff event. They demonstrated how their planes can fly; the longer they stayed in the air, the better the team did in the competition. The Science Olympiad, a yearly event held in each state across the nation, brings together middle and high school students interested in pursuing opportunities or careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Image Not FoundABQ District USACE Santa Clara Pueblo ProjectThe 2011 Las Conchas Wildfire in northern New Mexico, one of New Mexico’s worst fires ever, left behind years of recovery work, especially for the Santa Clara Pueblo NM. To counter this, the Albuquerque District Corps of Engineers is involved in efforts helping to protect the pueblo from future flooding and debris runoff. This project is just one of several ways the District works with many Native American Tribes, to address water resource challenges and other emergency management issues. Because of Corps’ experiences in the Albuquerque District, its team has recently been recognized by USACE as a center of expertise working in Indian Country.

Regulatory News

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has published its proposal to reissue and modify the Regulatory Program nationwide permits (NWPs) and solicit comments in the Federal Register, dated June 1, 2016. The Albuquerque District has also issued proposed regional conditions for the NWPs in the states of New Mexico, Colorado, as well as Navajo Nation.  More information about these proposals and instructions on where and how to provide comments is available by clicking here
