Gas furnaces are the most common heating source used in American homes. Higher efficiency gas furnaces have sealed combustion systems that draw their combustion air from outside the home and exhaust flue gases directly outside. Sealed combustion eliminates the possibility of backdrafting harmful flue gases back into the home or consuming too much oxygen. These furnaces extract more heat for greater efficiency using a condensing process, meaning that exhaust gases are passed through a second heat exchanger to extract more heat for greater efficiency, making them the most energy-efficient type of combustion furnace to operate. High-efficiency comfort equipment meets ENERGY STAR requirements for efficiency. Ultra-efficient comfort equipment meets or exceeds the criteria for ENERGY STAR’s “Most Efficient” designation.
