Asthma is a chronic disease where the airways swell. This causes wheezing, coughing and other symptoms that make it hard to breathe. The Asthma Capitals™ report is a yearly research project of AAFA. We research the most challenging places to live in the U.S. We rank the 100 largest U.S. metro areas. We rank each city by looking at 13 important factors. These include how often asthma occurs, environmental conditions and health care use.
The five most challenging cities to live in with asthma this year are:
- Memphis, Tennessee
- Richmond, Virginia
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Detroit, Michigan
- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Several major factors put Memphis’ in the top Asthma Capital spot this year. These include poor air quality, poor public smoking bans, high use of asthma medicines and a lot of emergency room visits for asthma.
