To the greatest extent possible, EPA tries to involve interested parties like communities, businesses, tribes, states, and individuals in the site assessment process. During the Preliminary Assessment (PA) and Site Inspection (SI), for example, Superfund representatives may interview the people who live near a site or have had experience with the site in the past to obtain information on the history of the site and the waste that was handled. States and tribes may also conduct the site assessment activities using funds provided by EPA.
