Research Interests: 

Associated with EMSL from its inception as a resource for solid-state NMR users, Dr. Lipton has aided EMSL users in obtaining experimental NMR data of other quadrupolar nuclides in various environments such as bio-inorganic, protein, or mineral samples. Some of the nuclides studied include strontium, calcium, magnesium, deuterium, and copper. Most recently, he has been working on new methods for extracting structural information in the solid-state via NMR methods. These include combining the NMR experiment with molecular theory utilizing NWChem on the EMSL supercomputer, as well as new pulse sequence methods and novel probe development. One of his main research focuses is studying the anti-ferromagnetic manganese cluster in photosystem II (PSII) and model systems using a combination of cryogenic solid-state NMR, EPR, and molecular theory. He is also continuing his interest in Zn2+ binding metalloproteins, particularly in metallo-lactamases that are responsible for antibiotic resistance in microbes. Recently he has begun work on humics, soils and intact plant material utilizing solid-state NMR to follow terrestrial carbon cycling.
