PNNL's Department of Defense (DoD) Sector provides innovative technology solutions in support of our military as a strategically responsive force and deter, reduce and counter the threat of weapons of mass destruction. Leveraging our robust history of defense-related research with the Hanford Site, PNNL is well-suited to address next-generation military needs and challenges.

The Laboratory's substantial capabilities portfolio spans the scientific and technical disciplines, ranging from fundamental science research to the development of technologies and strategies to enhance the detection and prevention of concealed chemical and biological agents. Laboratory strengths in chemistry and biology are producing key scientific advancements that can be applied to developing new chemical and biological detection technologies. Capabilities in fuel cells, materials and other disciplines are providing small power sources for soldiers and delivering energy-efficient applications to reduce energy consumption at military installations. Investments in new and emerging sensing capabilities drive the development of technologies to detect improvised explosive devices.
