Residential Lighting
Updates and News

With the market update of LEDs and the implementation of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) we are observing significant changes in the residential lighting market. In 2014 BPA launched an effort in collaboration with NEEA and northwest utilities to capture full category market data on lighting in order to be better positioned to track consumer response to all lighting technology (incandescent, halogen, compact fluorescent and LED). This effort continues today.

The Unit Energy Savings (UES) for lighting measures will continue to evolve; expect to see these measures reviewed at the Regional Technical Forum (RTF) annually. Full category lighting data (both efficient and inefficient) will enable the NW to maintain savings and track program impact longer and more effectively.
Have you seen the LED Market Intelligence report (April 2015) on the Momentum Savings web page?
The lighting market is undergoing a rapid transformation. The lighting market study will help the region capture and benefit from the non-residential lighting non-programmatic savings. It will also provide valuable information on LED adoption that will allow program managers and planners to best utilize the strong LED market momentum in their programs. More details here.
The Benefits of Energy Efficient Lighting

Efficient lighting options like compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) use about 75% less energy that an incandescent bulb. In addition, CFLs and LEDs produce much less heat, so they are safer to operate and last at least six times longer.
How BPA Supports Efficient Lighting

BPA is a key player in the region, developing and maintaining energy efficiency measures that meet total resource cost effectiveness. BPA works with the Regional Technical Forum to ensure that lighting savings has the most accurate inputs and is appropriately assessing the impacts of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA).

In addition, BPA provides regional coordination of the promotion Simple Steps, Smart Savingsā„¢ in collaboration with northwest public and investor-owned utilities.

The Simple Steps, Smart Savings program, currently implemented by CLEAResult, provides regional coordination for retail promotion of CFLs, LEDs, lighting fixtures, showerheads, TSVs, and advanced power strips. The program also includes delivery options for direct install, direct mail and bulk purchase to assist NW utilities with program delivery.
Utilities may participate by either signing a contract directly with CLEAResult or by allocating ECA funds to the program through BPA. The first step is to contact CLEAResult to determine your sales projections. Contact Ryan Crews at CLEAResult at (503) 688-1569, for details and options.
Please note: BPA does not provide incentives directly to homeowners. Please contact your local utility.
