Man fatally shot by sheriff's deputies in Pico Rivera

A man was fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in Pico Rivera on Saturday afternoon.

The shooting occurred in the 3400 block of Greenglade Avenue at 4:45 p.m., the Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. No deputies were injured and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.

Archbishop Gomez to take part in DTLA's Midnight Mass

Archbishop José H. Gomez will take part in this year’s Christmas Midnight Mass in downtown Los Angeles, the Archdiocese announced Saturday.

The bilingual Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels will begin around 11:30 p.m., when the cathedral’s choir will start singing Christmas carols, officials said.

El Monte police fatally shoot suspected drunk driver after he attempts to run over officers

El Monte police officers shot and killed a suspected drunk driver Friday night  as he drove toward them in his SUV, authorities said.

The incident began about 9:35 p.m. near the intersection of Valley Boulevard and Tyler Avenue when the motorist refused officers’ demands to pull over, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is assisting in the investigation.

Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Santa Barbara

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Saturday morning three miles from Santa Barbara, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 6:15 a.m. at a depth of 6.2 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was five miles from Goleta, six miles from Isla Vista and 13 miles from Carpinteria.

Storm brings record rainfall to L.A., while snow temporarily closes the Grapevine

A powerful storm brought record rainfall to parts of Southern California and closed Interstate 5 in the Grapevine for hours Saturday because of snow, officials said.

The California Highway Patrol said the 5 was closed in both directions at Parker Road about 4:25 a.m.

Around 8 a.m., officers began escorting traffic through the area, CHP Officer Peter Nicholson said.
