​Residential Lighting, Appliances, & Consumer Electronics

As the highest producer of energy efficiency savings in the residential sector, BPA continues to invest in regional programs and infrastructure to support lighting, appliances and consumer electronics. Since 2004 BPA has delivered a regional retail lighting (and showerhead) promotion to encourage efficient choices at the point of purchase. In the coming year we expect see this promotion expand to include LEDs and other energy efficiency measures.

​Heat Pump Water Heaters

For hot water savings, BPA supports energy efficient heat pump water heaters and energy-saving showerheads. Heat pump water heaters use up to 50% less energy than conventional water heaters. BPA is collaborating with regional utilities and NEEA to support an infrastructure for this new technology and to conduct additional research as manufacturers develop new models.

​Weatherization

While weatherization measures have been a core utility focus for decades, market research indicates that many homes still have poor insulation, single pane windows and major air leakage. Over the next five years BPA will target these remaining homes with new program approaches to support our utilities.

​Heating and Cooling Systems

As much as 50% of a homes' energy goes to heating and cooling. Making good decisions about heating equipment and duct systems can have a big impact - both in savings and in comfort. There are a number of options available to improve electric heating/cooling efficiency. BPA has invested in residential HVAC infrastructure, both through the Performance Tested Comfort Systems® (PTCS®) protocol and ductless heat pumps.

​New Construction (single-family, multifamily, and manufactured homes)
​ ​ ENERGY STAR certified new homes are designed and built to standards well above most other homes on the market today, delivering energy efficiency savings of up to 15 percent when compared to typical new homes. A new single family, multifamily or manufactured home that has earned the ENERGY STAR label undergoes a process of inspections, testing, and verification to meet strict requirements, delivering better quality, better comfort, and better durability.

​New Technologies

BPA has identified ductless heat pumps, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), heat pump water heaters, and behavior based energy efficiency as high priority emerging technologies to pursue. BPA is aggressively pursuing and supporting research on these technologies through current pilots or engineering analysis.
