Committed to helping others

Battelle Memorial Institute was established in 1929 through the Last Will and Testament of Gordon Battelle, a wealthy industrialist. His father, Colonel John Gordon Battelle, acquired his fortune by heading several Ohio companies involved in sheet metal, iron and steel works. Gordon Battelle was interested in teaming science and industry to solve problems for the betterment of mankind, and his Will laid the foundation that provided the Trust for Battelle Memorial Institute.

The Battelle value of Corporate Citizenship states that "We must honor our obligations to society in making Battelle an economic, intellectual, and social asset to each community in which we operate." The Battelle Vision states that Battelle is dedicated to:

  • Providing continual, high-quality corporate citizenship—We will enrich the communities in which staff live and work by supporting activities that enhance the quality of life.
  • Continuing our educational support—We will maintain and expand our Battelle-wide commitment to education and its role in business competitiveness and quality of life.

Battelle has maintained a long and rich history of corporate citizenship. Since its inception, Battelle has been active in the communities in which it maintains offices and has made substantial financial contributions toward their well-being. In addition, Battelle employees are very actively involved in community and professional activities—volunteering countless hours of their personal time.

Our focus

While Battelle does support the arts, civic, and health and human services projects, our primary focus is education. We continually encourage the development of our youth by supporting educational programs that provide important knowledge and skills, and that nurture the growth of elementary, secondary, and postsecondary students. We are interested in programs that emphasize mathematics, science, and technology education, particularly in the context of education reform. In today's competitive market, all students, not just those entering scientific careers, must be encouraged to recognize the importance of those subjects.
