The Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) regularly engages fellows in the sciences through the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellowship program. The program provides opportunities for scientists and engineers to gain firsthand experience with policymaking and implementation. Fellows contribute their knowledge and skills to policymakers, while living in the nation's capital and networking with other fellows. Policy fellowships can set scientists ahead in their field as professionals with a solid understanding of how government operates and how it influences and partners with the science community.

AAAS welcomes applicants from all scientific disciplines and career stages. Fellowship experiences are tailored to the fellow's technical background and career goals. At BETO, fellows work alongside experienced bioenergy professionals. They have contributed to strategic planning processes, technical papers, conference and workshop organization, and a host of other resume-building activities. AAAS fellows sometimes extend their work at BETO through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) fellowship program, which offers additional fellowship opportunities for postdoctoral scientists.
AAAS Fellowship Application Process
The AAAS Science and Technology Fellowship is a 12-month learning experience that may be extended. Prior experience with federal policymaking is not required. Once fellows are accepted into the AAAS fellowship program, a coordinator schedules interviews for placement with individual government agencies. Fellows may then request or be selected for an interview with BETO. BETO offers a limited number of fellowships, and applicants to the AAAS fellowship program should apply broadly to their scientific expertise and consider a variety of fellowship placement opportunities.
The AAAS website contains the most up-to-date application schedule for the Science & Technology Fellowship program. The online application opens late spring and closes late fall for the fellowship program of the following year.
