Meet Katie Krushinski, Training and Communication Coordinator

Training and Communication Coordinator, NOAA's Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center (DRC), Office of Response and Restoration

Katie Krushinski

In my job as a training and communication coordinator, I oversee all aspects of trainings, events, and meetings held at the DRC. I also publish the monthly newsletter and provide experience and knowledge to enhance the NOS all-hazards initiative, which strives to improve preparedness, planning, and response capacity for both natural and human-caused disasters.

What do you like most about working at NOS?

I enjoy being able to work with and meet new people on nearly a daily basis. It never gets dull around here.

What is the hardest part of your job?

It may sound silly, but I think the hardest part of my job is trying to take pictures of DRC events and not have them all look the same. It's a constant challenge!

What is your educational background?

I have a BS in professional writing from Missouri State University. I'm a certified emergency manager through the International Association of Emergency Managers, and also a professional continuity practitioner through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). I'm also halfway through my master's in emergency management through Jacksonville State University.

What inspired your interest in the ocean and coasts?

I grew up near the coast in Maryland and North Carolina. I love being near the water, so getting involved in preserving and protecting our coastal resources was very important to me.

How did you end up working at NOAA?

I applied to the contracting firm Genwest Systems, Inc., with hopes of continuing my emergency management career path here in Mobile, Alabama. And here I am!

What advice do you have for young people wanting a career in the "ocean realm"?

I recommend volunteering as much as possible in places like zoos, estuariums, or anywhere that strives to protect and conserve our ocean and coasts.
