Prizes

Contest #3: Open Data by Design is backed by $17,500 in prizes for the best designs that use one or more featured input. You can use information design, graphic design, animation, 2D and 3D representation, formatting or standardization to add value, improve clarity, increase accessibility or reflect scale in a more compelling manner than the data does by itself. Contestants may combine Featured Inputs with other public data, open data or personal energy data in their submissions. Please review the evaluation criteria in the Official Rules for additional guidance.

Best Information Design: $5,000:

  • An Information Design is the presentation of information in a way that fosters efficient and effective understanding of it. Information Designs can be text-only or text plus graphics or similar that focuses on improving the usability of data, which can be applied to multiple instances of a data set. Information Designs can be interactive, utilize formatting, or adapt source data to a standard architecture or information standard. Templates and XML style sheets are also examples of Information Designs.

Best Visualization: $5,000:

  • A Visualization can be static or dynamic in nature, can be two-dimensional or three-dimensional, and can offer insights into issues related to scale and multiple viewpoints or perspectives. A Visualization can represent the synthesis of open energy data with open data and personal data (with appropriate accommodation for privacy), or submissions that offer multiple dimensions or perspectives. Visualizations can be interactive or animated as well.

Best Infographic: $5,000:

  • Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly and clearly. They can improve understanding by utilizing graphics to enhance a person’s ability to see patterns and trends. Infographics are generally two-dimensional, static, and suitable for web or print display.

Popular Choice Award: $2,500:

  • IThe public will have the opportunity to select a Popular Choice Award winner, which will be determined by public vote on the energychallenge.energy.gov website during the Public Voting Period..

Winning Submissions and a selection of additional Submissions deemed by the judges to have special merit will be publicly displayed at the Department of Energy Headquarters building in Washington, DC.


The winners of these prizes (collectively, "Winners") will have their Submissions featured on the http://energychallenge.energy.gov website, or other Department of Energy and affiliated websites such as OpenEI.org.
