Acknowledging EMSL and Terms of Use

Additional Information

Terms and Conditions for EMSL Use

Each participant on an accepted proposal is expected to understand their requirements, obligations, and responsibilities for having onsite or remote access to and use of EMSL equipment, services, information, and other material consistent with the User Agreements signed by their institutions and Battelle Memorial Institute, Pacific Northwest Division (Battelle) acting in its capacity as the operating contractor of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). In general, users whose open research proposals are accepted may use EMSL resources free of charge following the Terms and Conditions for nonproprietary use. Nonproprietary, or open research, is loosely defined as science and engineering research for which the resulting information is published and shared broadly within the scientific community. Different Terms and Conditions, including cost policies and other restrictions, apply to proprietary research and are specified in the contract with Battelle.

Publication Policy

As part of the Terms and Conditions for using EMSL, authors of publications are required to report all EMSL-related work, i.e., journal articles, conference presentations, books or book chapters, theses, contributed news articles, internal staff reports, general ALS publications, brochures, etc., via the User Portal. In turn, all publications resulting from work done in whole, or in part, with EMSL resources are reported to the Department of Energy (DOE).

Acknowledging EMSL Use and Collaborators

Scientists who publish results of research using EMSL resources and capabilities are required to include an acknowledgment of EMSL in any publications, including but not limited to journal articles, presentations, reports, proceedings, and book chapters, resulting from work performed here. Publications should specify the collaborative nature of the project, and authorship is expected to include all those contributing significantly to the work.

EMSL staff as co-authors

EMSL staff often provide major contributions to research carried out by EMSL users. These contributions may include conceptualizing, planning and implementation of experiments, as well as enhancing the results by way of sample management, analysis and interpretation of data, or full collaboration on the project. If EMSL personnel contribute significantly to the project, they are expected to be credited as authors contributing to those aspects of the publication. If, by agreement with the project lead or author, EMSL staff take a lead role in the analysis, planning, writing, and editing of the manuscript, those individuals are expected to appear as first and/or senior authors of the paper.

Note that if a Pacific Northwest National Laboratory or EMSL staff member is listed as a co-author, the manuscript should be sent to the staff member at least 14 days prior to submission so that the publication can be reviewed and processed through PNNL's clearance system.
