The Energy & Environment Directorate's mission is unique in its diversity; From discovering efficient sources for renewable energy to providing scientifically defensible solutions for legacy nuclear waste. Through grid modernization and hydropower research, to buildings and appliances, EED's wide-ranging research areas are creating a safer environment while moving new ideas from the bench to the market. EED is dedicated to a cleaner future, restored environment, and a stronger economy.
Science

National Security
The National Security Directorate is the steward of PNNL's assets to help prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. NSD provides the tools and technologies to support the detection of weapons of mass destruction, help the United States manage its nonproliferation treaties, and secure our nation's borders.
