Seabirds

Seabirds encompass a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, and physiologies, known for long migrations, seasonal mating and nesting, and switching of feeding grounds and prey organisms. Seabird populations are at higher risk from human activities because they tend to be long-lived, mature late, and lay few eggs. Migratory birds may be at additional risk from collision with offshore wind turbine blades or floating wave devices in adverse weather. The physical presence of any offshore structure may cause either attraction or avoidance from birds. Energy removal by ocean energy devices can be a concern for birds that rely on water flow and sediment processes for feeding and nesting. Power cables that bisect the intertidal may pose a risk to shorebirds and their habitats.
