Employees and leaders from the government and private industry – and several invited guests – came together last month to dedicate the Lawrence Livermore Solar Center.

The solar array occupies 10 acres in the northwest corner of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) property. Announced in 2015, it contains 12,720 solar panels with a capacity of 3.3 MW. The facility is expected to generate approximately 6,300 MWh annually.

Juwi Solar Inc. designed, engineered, and installed the fixed-tilt solar photovoltaic array at the lab's site, installing the last ones in January. Juwi will operate and maintain the PSEG Solar Source-owned, ground-mounted system.

The federal Western Area Power Association will buy the renewable power from this system through a 20- year purchase contract and resell it to NNSA’s LLNL and the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

“I congratulate the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration for their commitment to increase renewable energy generation on America’s public lands,” said Christine Harada, Federal Chief Sustainability Officer for the White House Council on Environmental Quality. “This effort is a great example of the federal government leading by example. The Lawrence Livermore Solar Center will provide the DOE with cost-effective solar power for years to come.”
