“Rule Your Attic!” Consumer Outreach Campaign Launches

ENERGY STAR encourages homeowners to increase their homes’ comfort and energy efficiency this heating seasonby measuring their attic insulation and making improvements.

This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launches its first-ever “Rule Your Attic!” with ENERGY STAR consumer awareness campaign. Through fun and engaging content, the campaign will encourage homeowners to climb into their attics, measure the insulation levels, take photos or shoot videos of their insulation and attics, and post the content on ENERGY STAR’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Those posting photos will also be encouraged to use the #RuleYourAttic hashtag.

“In houses across America, poorly sealed and under-insulated attics are taking money out of homeowner’s pockets due to high utility bills,” said Jonathan Passe, Chief of the ENERGY STAR Residential Branch. “The Rule Your Attic! campaign will educate and engage homeowners on how sealing and insulating their attics can make their homes more energy efficient. That means lower utility bills and greater comfort - and fewer of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change.”

As homeowners post photos, EPA will offer expert advice through follow-up posts and replies. This feedback will encourage the homeowner to make a decision on next steps – including adding more insulation, shopping for materials and products, or hiring a contractor. ENERGY STAR will also provide additional information and resources about sealing and insulation, as well as posting three new videos to its social media accounts. These short videos will feature an ENERGY STAR insulation expert explaining to the homeowner:  1) how to measure attic insulation, 2) the benefits of attic sealing and insulation, and 3) things to consider after deciding to make improvements. ENERGY STAR estimates that sealing air leaks and adding insulation can save homeowners up to 10 percent on their annual energy bills.

The campaign will provide partners and stakeholders, including insulation manufacturers, home improvement retailers, and utility program sponsors with an ENERGY STAR marketing platform to promote sealing and insulation products and educate consumers – and contractors who may be performing the work – on the benefits of correctly sealing and insulating their homes.

ENERGY STAR is the simple choice for energy efficiency. For more than 20 years, people in America have looked to EPA’s ENERGY STAR program for guidance on how to save energy, save money, and protect the environment. Behind each blue label is a product, building, or home that is independently certified to use less energy and cause fewer of the emissions that contribute to climate change. Today, ENERGY STAR is the most widely recognized symbol for energy efficiency in the world, helping families and businesses save $300 billion on utility bills, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by two billion metric tons since 1992.
