EPA’s Brownfields Program provides funds to empower states, communities, tribes, and nonprofits to prevent, inventory, assess, clean up, and reuse brownfield sites.

Natural disasters cause thousands of deaths annually, and in 2013 alone caused over $130 billion in damage worldwide. There is clear societal need to better understand and mitigate the risks posed to the US by natural hazards, consistent with the mandate of the National Science Foundation (NSF) “…to promote the progress of science [and] advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare....” NSF and the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) have long supported basic research in scientific and engineering disciplines necessary to understand natural hazards and extreme events, including through the Interdisciplinary Research in Hazards and Disasters (Hazards SEES) program and multiple core programs in the GEO Directorate. PREEVENTS is designed as a logical successor to Hazards SEES and is one element of the NSF-wide Risk and Resilience activity, which has the overarching goal of improving predictability and risk assessment, and increasing resilience, in order to reduce the impact of extreme events on our life, society, and economy. PREEVENTS will provide an additional mechanism to support research and related activities that will improve our understanding of the fundamental processes underlying natural hazards and extreme events in the geosciences. PREEVENTS is focused on natural hazards and extreme events, and not on technological or deliberately human-caused hazards. The PREEVENTS portfolio will include the potential for disciplinary and multidisciplinary research at all scales, particularly aimed at areas ripe for significant near- or medium-term advances. PREEVENTS seeks projects that will (1) enhance understanding of the fundamental processes underlying natural hazards and extreme events on various spatial and temporal scales, as well as the variability inherent in such hazards and events, and (2) improve our capability to model and forecast such hazards and events. All projects requesting PREEVENTS support must be primarily focused on these two targets. In addition, PREEVENTS projects will improve our understanding of the effects of natural hazards and extreme events and will enable development, with support by other programs and organizations, of new tools to enhance societal preparedness and resilience against such impacts.

The purpose of CIG is to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies, while leveraging the Federal investment in environmental enhancement and protection in conjunction with agricultural production. CIG projects are expected to lead to the transfer of conservation technologies, management systems, and innovative approaches (such as market-based systems) to EQIP eligible producers, into NRCS technical manuals and guides, or to the private sector. CIG is used to apply or demonstrate previously proven technology in order to increase adoption, with an emphasis on opportunities to scale proven, emerging conservation strategies. CIG promotes the sharing of skills, knowledge, technologies, and facilities among communities, governments, and other institutions to ensure that scientific and technological developments are accessible to a wider range of users. CIG projects targeting innovative on-the-ground conservation, including pilot projects, field demonstrations, and on-farm conservation research. On-farm conservation research is defined as an investigation conducted to answer a specific conservation-related question using a statistically valid design while employing farm-scale equipment on farm fields.

NASA’s Office of Education Earth Systems, Technology, and Energy Education for MUREP (ESTEEM) solicits proposals from Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), as identified by the U .S. Department of Education, to strengthen institutional capacity in conducting STEM undergraduate degree seeking programs with a focus on Earth System Science (ESS )and Climate Resiliency and enhance pre-service secondary education STEM preparation. Within ESS, focus areas are atmospheric composition, weather, climate variability and changes, water and energy cycle, carbon cycle and ecosystems, and earth surface and interior.

Programming available only in the Northwest CSC and Southeast CSC. This program was created to ensure that the National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center is responsive to the research and management needs of Federal and State agencies to provide science and technical support regarding the impacts of climate change in fish, wildlife, plants and ecological processes. National coordination of research and modeling at regional centers will ensure uniformity of downscaling and forecasting models and standardized information to support management of fish and wildlife resources and regional partnership collaborations. The Climate Science Centers will provide access to the expertise at cooperating universities and supports the mission of the Climate Science Center Program.

NOAA/OAR/Ocean Acidification Program (OAP) is soliciting proposals for collaborative projects of up to 2 years in duration that synthesize ocean acidification information at a regional scale (e.g. Large Marine Ecosystem, large estuary or collection of small estuaries, and state or collection of states in US waters) to determine where societal vulnerabilities to ocean acidification exist or are emerging, in order to provide actionable information for marine resource decision makers. This funding opportunity will not support the collection of new chemical or ecological observations or species response data. Social science data collection is permitted.

Draft budgets and workplans are due January 17, 2017. EPA’s policy is to work with tribes on a government-to-government basis to enhance environmental protection in Tribal communities. In 1992, Congress passed the Indian Environmental General Assistance Program Act which authorizes EPA to provide General Assistance Program (GAP) grants to federally recognized tribes and tribal consortia for planning, developing, and establishing environmental protection programs. The GAP program is exempt from competition, therefore, applications that meet the stated requirements in program regulations and guidance will be funded if funds are available.

SOIs are invited for projects that support regional CSC science priorities. CSC funded projects cover a variety of topics that address the impacts of climate change on fish, wildlife, ecosystems, & the communities they support.

The objective of this FOA is to invite States, Indian tribes, irrigation districts, water districts, and other organizations with water or power delivery authority to leverage their money and resources by cost sharing with the Bureau of Reclamation on projects that seek to conserve and use water more efficiently, increase the use of renewable energy and improve energy efficiency, benefit endangered and threatened species, facilitate water markets, or carry out other activities to address climate-related impacts on water or prevent any water-related crisis or conflict.

Healthy and productive fisheries are an essential component of the U.S. economy. There is increasing concern about the impacts of climate variability and change on fish stocks, fisheries, and marine ecosystems in the U.S. Climate variability and change influences many parameters (e.g. extreme events, winds, ocean temperatures, stratification, currents, coastal precipitation, inundation, etc.) that directly and indirectly affect marine ecosystem conditions including the abundance, distribution, and productivity of fish stocks that support economically important fisheries. Sustainable fisheries management in a changing climate requires an improved understanding of how climate, fishing, and other stressors interact to affect fish stocks (including their habitats and prey), fisheries and fishing-dependent communities.

EPA's Office of Environmental Education grants program supports environmental education projects that enhance the public's awareness, knowledge, and skills to make informed environmental decisions and take responsible actions towards the environment.

The NOAA Climate Program Office’s (CPO) Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments (RISA) program supports research teams that conduct innovative, interdisciplinary, user-inspired, and regionally relevant research that informs resource management and public policy. CPO funds a network of RISA teams across the United States (US) and Pacific Islands, which are a model for interdisciplinary science and assessment. NOAA’s RISA program is overseen by CPO’s Climate and Societal Interactions (CSI) division. CSI’s mission is to inform improvements in resilience and preparedness in diverse socio-economic regions and sectors throughout the US and abroad through the use of climate knowledge and information. Our research advances the nation’s understanding of climate-related risks and vulnerabilities across sectors and regions, and the development of tools to foster more informed decision making.

Deadline passed as of October 20, 2016. Deadline for 2017 unknown. In an effort by the Department to foster a more holistic engagement with Tribes on energy issues, the Department’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Tribal Energy Program and its activities are being consolidated into DOE’s Office of Indian Energy. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) builds on efforts by the Tribal Energy Program, and the authorities granted the Office of Indian Energy under EPAct 2005, to accelerate deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technology on Indian Lands.

The objective of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to invite states, tribes, irrigation districts, water districts, and other organizations with water or power delivery authority to leverage their money and resources by cost sharing with Reclamation on Drought Resiliency Projects that will increase the reliability of water supply; improve exchange of water; and provide benefits for fish, wildlife, and the environment to mitigate impacts caused by drought.This helps to prepare for and address the impacts of drought and climate change.
