Quarterly Coal Distribution Report

The Quarterly Coal Distribution Report (QCDR) provides detailed U.S. domestic coal distribution data by coal origin state, coal destination state, mode of transportation, and consuming sector. All quarterly data are preliminary and will be superseded by the release of the corresponding "Annual Coal Distribution Report."
Highlights for the fourth quarter 2015:
- Total domestic coal distribution was an estimated 193.7 million short tons (mmst) in the fourth quarter 2015. This value is 24.3 mmst (i.e. 11.2%) lower than the previous quarter and 36.2 mmst (i.e. 15.7%) lower than the fourth quarter of 2014 estimates.
- Wyoming was the leading origin state of coal, accounting for about 91.3 mmst of shipments delivered to 32 states. Texas was the leading destination state, receiving about 23.1 mmst of domestic coal.
- Total shipments moved via railroads, river, and truck accounted for an estimated 69.4%, 11.5%, and 9.7% of the coal, respectively. Tramway, conveyor, and slurry pipeline accounted for about 9.4% of coal shipments.
- Electric utilities and independent power producers received approximately 93.0% of the total distribution.
