Organization
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's (PNNL's) strategy looks at America's needs for the next decade and identifies four areas where PNNL can make major contributions in science, technologies and leadership. The four areas are to:
- strengthen U.S. scientific foundations for innovation
- increase U.S. energy capacity and reduce dependence on imported oil
- prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
- reduce environmental effects of human activity and create sustainable systems.
The National Security Directorate (NSD) is the steward of the Laboratory's assets to help "prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction." NSD provides the tools and technologies to support the detection of weapons of mass destruction, help the United States manage its nonproliferation treaties, and secure our nation's borders.
Approximately half of PNNL's $1.0 billion annual business volume in FY 2012 reflects research, technology development and policy work in national security programs for the Department of Energy, Homeland Security, the National Nuclear Security Administration and other federal agencies.
NSD's research and support personnel work directly with academia, other national laboratories, government agencies and industry to deliver high-impact, science-based, practical solutions to our clients.
