Welcome to the Marine Mammal Commission

The Commission was created under Title II of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, which took effect on 21 December of that year. The Commission's primary focus and duties are the protection and conservation of marine mammals.

This site provides a single point of information on the activities, programs, and publications of the Marine Mammal Commission and its Committee of Scientific Advisors on Marine Mammals, and conveys other relevant information on the conservation and protection of marine mammals and their ecosystems.

 

Announcements

National Research and Conservation Priorities

In the coming months, the Marine Mammal Commission plans to meet with officials from the National Marine Fisheries Service in each of the Service's six regions. The purpose of each meeting will be to identify the most pressing marine mammal research and management needs in each region. The Commission will use that information to help it develop a set of national priorities for guiding federal conservation efforts for marine mammals.

The first meeting will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on 7 August 2012 in the National Marine Fisheries Service's Northeast Region. The meeting will be held at the Clark Conference Room, Northeast Fisheries Science Center, 166 Water Street, Woods Hole, Massachusetts 02543, telephone (508) 495-2000.

Additional meetings will be held on Friday, 25 January 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in St. Petersburg, Florida, and on Tuesday, 29 January 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in La Jolla, California. The St. Petersburg, Florida meeting will be held in the Dolphin Conference Room at the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Southeast Regional Office, 263 13th Avenue South, St. Petersburg, Florida 33701. The La Jolla, California meeting will be held in Room 370 at the National Marine Fisheries Service’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center, 3333 North Torrey Pines Court, La Jolla, California 92037.

Survey of Federally Funded Research and Conservation

The Marine Mammal Commission has issued its request for information from federal agencies on marine mammal research and conservation efforts that they conduct and/or support. The Commission currently seeks information for efforts funded and conducted during Fiscal Years 2010 and/or 2011. The data call will close on Thursday, July 12, 2012.
