Joseph A. McBrearty

Joseph McBrearty joined the Office of Science in August 2010 immediately upon retiring from a 30-year career in the U.S. Navy, where he specialized in nuclear propulsion and nuclear weapons systems, training, control and safety. In less than a year, Mr. McBrearty was selected to become the Deputy Director for Field Operations. In this capacity, Mr. McBrearty serves as the line manager responsible for ensuring that the infrastructure and management systems are in place at ten National Laboratories to enable the Science missions to succeed. He provides leadership in the strategic planning, management, oversight, and coordination of the SC field operations at the SC Site Offices, as well as the operations support provided by the SC Integrated Support Center and Headquarters offices.

Mr. McBrearty served in the U.S. Navy on board four nuclear attack and ballistic missile submarines including USS Henry Clay (SSBN 625) Gold, USS Benjamin Franklin (SSBN 640) Blue, USS Honolulu (SSN 718) and commanded USS Dallas (SSN 700). Ashore he has served in a variety of key billets including the CINCPACFLT Nuclear Propulsion Examining Board, command of the TRIDENT Refit Facility in Kings Bay, GA and command of the U.S. Navy's Officer Training Command in Newport, RI. He also served as the Chief of Staff for Commander Submarine Group TWO in New London, CT. Mr. McBrearty earned numerous awards and decorations including the Defense Superior Service Medal and three awards of the Legion of Merit.

Mr. McBrearty earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Maryland and a Masters Degree in International Studies from the Naval War College.
