The NWS announced yesterday that a major upgrade to Meteorological Assimilation Data Ingest System (MADIS) by ESRL/GSD is now live in operations. MADIS is a meteorological observational database and data delivery system that provides observations that cover the globe. This milestone was a multi-year effort by the GSD MADIS team.

The upgrade incorporates new data from NCEP’s Hydrometeorological Automated Data System (HADS), the NWS’s Automated Flood Warning System (AFWS), and USDA’s Snow Telemetry (SNOTEL) automated snow monitoring system. It also takes in data from the DOT’s Clarus that connects a wide variety of surface sensors from road weather information systems. Users can now easily access real-time measurements of floods, rivers, snow amounts, in addition to other valuable weather observations.

ESRL GSD handed off the operational code to NWS/NCEP Central Operations in September for testing. MADIS continues to run quasi-operationally in a research environment so GSD can continue to improve data ingest schemes, integration of additional datasets and providers, and quality control and distribution methods.
