CORRECTION Aug. 15, 2011: The first edition of this report, released in March 2011, had some incorrect text and was not clear about AIM methods in the red hake chapter. In August 2011 a second edition of this report was released with corrections and clarifications added in the “SAW51 Editor’s Notes.” These changes do not affect any earlier conclusions about red hake stock status. Although the AIM method is described by using a three-year centered average of the abundance index, the red hake calculations for computing relative F and AIM were based on survey indices from single years, and not on the three-year average described herein. In the red hake chapter (last two paragraphs of the “Executive Summary” and in the results for TOR 6) text has been changed from “The exploitation index … for 2007-2009 … was below the threshold…” to “The exploitation index … for 2009 … was below the threshold…”. This text needed correction because: 1. the exploitation indices that were given were for one year (2009) and 2. relative F in the AIM analysis was based on one year. With this change there is now consistency in calculations between fishing rate and the recommended overfishing threshold used to determine overfishing status. Similar corrections have been made to the red hake Assessment Summary Report CRD 11-01. Finally, analyses conducted after SARC51 by Dr. Paul Rago confirmed that for red hake AIM results based on one year indices had better AIM model diagnostics compared to the three-year smoothing approach.
