DRAFT MOOSE HUNT PLAN
A comment period for draft moose hunting on Des Lacs National will take place on September 29, 2016 through October 12, 2016.
The Lostwood WMD Complex, located in northwest North Dakota encompasses five counties and is comprised of four National Wildlife Refuges and two Wetland Management Districts.
Des Lacs is managed as part of the Lostwood Wetland Management District Complex.
The National Wildlife Refuge System, within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, manages a national network of lands and waters set aside to conserve America’s fish, wildlife, and plants.

The refuge features a Canada Goose Nature Trail which runs 7.5 miles through the southern end of Upper Des Lacs Lake. The trail is open to hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing. Tasker's Coulee Day Use Area is a unique wooded area consisting of mowed grass nature trails and areas for wildlife observation, hiking, or group events.
This 19-mile auto tour route provides views of the Des Lacs River Valley and is part of the North Dakota Scenic Backways program. Interpretive panels are located along the route and describe Refuge wildlife and habitat. This route offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
The refuge is open to deer hunting, upland bird hunting, and turkey hunting. Hunting is permitted in designated areas during designated hunting seasons with the proper licenses. Non-toxic shot is required for upland game hunting.
Known for its two color morphs, white or blue, this species can be seen migrating in great numbers through the refuge in the spring and fall.
