Cleaner Air, Cleaner Bay by Chesapeake Bay Program
Actions by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its state partners have led to significant reductions in airborne nitrogen, a major source of pollution that impacts the land and water in and around the Chesapeake Bay.
Ecological health studies of the Bay have helped identify air pollution, specifically from nitrogen oxide (NOx) and ammonia (NH3) emissions, as an important contributor to problems with excess nutrients in bodies of water. Clean Air Act regulations that focus primarily on reducing NOx, as well as decades of enforcement actions, have led to a steady decline in air pollution that affects the Bay region and serves as a key factor in making progress toward meeting the water quality goals outlined in the Chesapeake Bay Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL).
