Who Are We and What Do We Do?

The NOAA Fisheries Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office (formerly Northeast Regional Office), manages living marine resources and their habitats over approximately 100,000 square miles of the northwest Atlantic Ocean.  The region encompasses the eastern seaboard from Cape Hatteras, through Maine, including the bays, estuaries, and rivers that support nursery and feeding grounds for a rich diversity of sea life.  

Here in the Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office, our primary responsibility is the stewardship of marine fishery resources, protected species (including marine mammals, sea turtles, and endangered fish), and riverine, oceanic and coastal habitats.  We manage commercial and recreational marine fisheries in partnership with the New England and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Councils, and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission.  We are located in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with field staff in offices from Maine through Virginia.  For more information about our programs, see our website.

Our management and stewardship efforts in the northeast U.S. are supported by research conducted by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center, headquartered in Woods Hole, Massachusetts with research facilities throughout the region. Their science program is multidisciplinary and focused on monitoring the status of key marine species, developing ecosystem-level knowledge, supporting sustainable aquaculture, understanding human influences on ocean environments, and identifying the effects of management actions on coastal communities.  More information on the Science Center can be found online at their website.
