7th Fleet Sailor Steers Navy Toward Virtual Reality — Imagine a next-generation virtual reality software program that will help steer Navy ships on the right course. One Naval officer was not only able to imagine it, but he also invented a virtual reality navigation prototype.

CNO, MCPON Begin 3-Day San Diego Visit — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens began a three-day trip to San Diego Feb. 17. During the first day of the trip, they visited Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center (SSC) Pacific, whose work helps ensure America maintains a technological advantage and features heavily in CNO's strategic guidance, 'A Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority.'

VFA-113, NAS Lemoore Say Goodbye to the F/A-18C Hornet — The "Stingers" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 113 conducted the last flight of a fleet F/A-18C Hornet based at Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore Feb. 17. The flight was conducted by VFA-113's Maintenance Officer Lt. Cmdr. Kristen "Dragon" Hansen.

US Navy Aircraft Showcase Capabilities, Promote Regional Partnerships during Singapore Air Show — U.S. Navy aircraft are participating in the Singapore International Airshow Feb. 16-21 held at the renowned Changi National Exhibition Center in Changi, Singapore. Crews from the Navy's P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and two F/A-18E/F Super Hornets joined aircrews from the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marines for the weeklong exhibition.

AFCEA 2016 Kicks Off in San Diego — More than 150,000 professionals in the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard gathered in the San Diego Convention Center, Feb. 17-19, for the West Coast's premier naval conference and exposition (WEST 2016). For 26 years, WEST has brought together military and industry leaders to network and discuss the problem solving techniques of innovative technologies and how they can improve security.

Navy Finalizes 8 Cybersecurity Standards, Now Available to Industry — To ensure critical warfighting capabilities can operate, fight, and win in a contested cyber environment, the Navy has finalized the first eight in a series of more than two dozen planned foundational cybersecurity standards that govern the vast majority of the sea services' systems and programs. The Information Technology/Information Assurance Technical Authority Board (IT/IA TAB) developed these cybersecurity standards to provide a uniform security architecture framework, including the consistent application of security controls, for Department of the Navy afloat, ashore, aviation and space systems.

NAVSEA Warfare Centers Collaborate, Deliver Technical Support to Marines, ONR — Scientists and engineers from Navy Centers of Innovation developed a new tool that allows Sailors and Marines to save money and time using scanners and modeling and simulation during logistical and planning phases of operational maneuvers. The two Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Surface Warfare Centers -- Panama City, Florida, and Philadelphia divisions -- continue a collaboration effort and are using 3D scanners to scan the inside of ships of the line to help U.S. Marines determine if vehicles or equipment may be stowed on Navy surface vessels before ever turning the vehicles ignition.

First African-American Woman from NROTC Selected for Nuclear Submarine Service — The first African-American woman from Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) has been selected to serve aboard U.S. Navy submarines. Southern University and A&M College Midshipman 1st Class Nsombi Roberts, from Palm Bay, Florida, was interviewed Oct. 29 by Adm. James F. Caldwell, Jr., the director, naval nuclear propulsion program and the top Navy officer in the submarine force in Washington, D.C.

The Navy's Third MCPON, OSCM Bob Walker Has Passed Away — It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of our Navy's third Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, Robert "Bob" Walker. He passed away peacefully at 1715 with his wife and family members by his side. Our office will provide dates and times for his memorial and funeral services as they become available.
