NAVSUP GLS Showcases U.S. Navy's Logistics Capabilities to Wharton MBA Students — Navy Supply Systems Command Global Logistics Support (NAVSUP GLS) showcased the world-class logistics capabilities of the U.S. Navy to students from University of Pennsylvania Wharton School at various Navy facilities in San Diego Nov. 9.

Top Naval War College Seminar Group Awarded Stavridis Planning Award — The Adm. James G. Stavridis Award for Excellence in Theater Strategic Planning was presented by Provost Lewis M. Duncan to the top seminar of the intermediate-level Theater Security Decision Making (TSDM) course at U.S. Naval War College (NWC), Nov. 4. The event was the capstone of a trimester focusing on contemporary security studies, with a strong regional emphasis.
Navy Nominee Wins Fisher Award — The Chief of Naval Personnel announced Nov. 9, that the Department of the Navy (DON) nominee for the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian Humanitarian Award has received the honor as the overall Department of Defense (DOD) winner. After competing against entrants from all the service branches, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) organization was chosen as the top nominee for exhibiting compassionate care and support to surviving family members and friends of fallen service members. The organization has reached over 50,000 survivors in addition to helping children cope with the death of a loved one through mentoring and counseling.
A Yankee Serving Across the Pond — BLUF: The Personnel Exchange Program (PEP), available through detailers, allows Sailors to serve with foreign navies or with another branch of the U.S. Military. If it is not an English speaking country, Sailors will be sent to language training before integration.
NAVIDFOR Holds Leadership Summit — More than 100 Information Dominance Corps (IDC) senior leaders, commanding officers (COs), executive officers (XOs) and command master chiefs (CMCs) gathered in Suffolk, Virginia, this week to attend the Navy Information Dominance Forces (NAVIDFOR) second annual Commander's Summit. The goal of the summit was to bring together commands administratively aligned under NAVIDFOR for discussions on type command (TYCOM) matters such as readiness challenges, readiness reporting, priorities, lines of responsibilities and readiness issues.
CNO: Innovation Comes from Learning Faster — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson attended the Reagan National Defense Forum (RNDF) in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. and participated in a discussion panel on military innovation, Nov. 7. CNO spoke on the panel, Harnessing Innovation for Defense: the Role of Defense and Non-defense Companies, a topic which complements his stated belief in the importance of creativity and initiative to the future of the U.S. Navy.
Final Multiple Score Calculator App Available for Mobile Devices — A new application for mobile devices to allow Sailors to calculate their final multiple score (FMS) is available as of Nov. 6. The FMS application calculates the advancement formula, giving Sailors a total score based on the input of each FMS element. The app is designed to provide Sailors with quick, easy access to both resources about advancement and FMS elements, as a tool to aid in the advancement process.
Solar Ready Vets — The U.S. Department of Energy-sponsored initiative known as Solar Ready Vets is a five-week training program providing the technical knowledge necessary to begin a career in the solar industry. This course is offered at the Tidewater Community College Chesapeake campus in partnership with Pennsylvania State University and provides students with training and employment opportunities in the emerging field of solar energy technology.
Patent Push: U.S. Navy Received Nearly 400 Patents In Fiscal Year 2015 — The Department of the Navy received 393 patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in fiscal year 2015-the largest number of patents the Navy has received since fiscal year 1977, officials announced Nov. 4. This is the largest number of patents the Navy has received since fiscal year 1977. This surge in patents is critical since by investing in science and technology research-and strengthening the Navy's patent portfolio-the Office of Naval Research (ONR) lays the groundwork for new discoveries that could benefit both the American warfighter and the public. Think of innovations such as cell phones, GPS and radar, which began as ONR-supported military technology but eventually transformed global culture as well.
Center for Information Dominance Recognized for 40 Years of Accreditation — The Council on Occupational Education (COE) acknowledged the Center for Information Dominance (CID) for completing 40 years of accredited institution status at the council's annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, Nov. 4. The council is a nonprofit, voluntary membership organization serving post-secondary education and training institutions to provide quality assurance reviews of their career and technical workforce training programs.
The Department of the Navy and Southern Company Subsidiary Gulf Power to Develop Two Large-Scale Solar Facilities — The Department of the Navy (DON) and Southern Company subsidiary Gulf Power signed a real estate outgrant Oct. 28, to develop two large-scale solar electric generating facilities in Florida that will have an estimated total capacity of 117 megawatts (MW) direct current (DC). On a sunny day, the combined capacity could power approximately 13,600 homes.

ONR: Go to NEPTUNE for New Ideas in Energy — Officials announced on Nov. 2 the Department of the Navy and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) launch of the Naval Enterprise Partnership Teaming with Universities for National Excellence (NEPTUNE) initiative. The program aims to break new ground in alternative energy, increase educational opportunities for the military community, and bolster science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) outreach.
