Vice Chief of Naval Operations Visits Boot Camp — Vice Chief of Naval Operations (VCNO) Adm. Michelle Howard visited Recruit Training Command (RTC) to tour the base and attend a recruit pass-in-review while serving as the ceremony's reviewing officer, July 24. RTC, the Navy's only boot camp, graduated 709 Sailors from nine divisions and was attended by more than 2,000 family members and friends of the recruits from across the United States. Howard was joined by other staff including Rear Adm. Stephen Evans, commander, Naval Service Training Command, and Capt. Doug Pfeifle, commanding officer, Recruit Training Command.

US, Singapore Navies Complete Complex Training, Achieve New Milestones During CARAT 2015 — The U.S. Navy and Republic of Singapore Navy completed the 21st annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Singapore after 11 days of comprehensive training both at sea and ashore, July 24. CARAT Singapore featured a series of dynamic training engagements including a five-day sea phase involving ships, submarines and aircraft from both countries.

Digging Up the Past: Salvaging CSS Georgia — Sailors from Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit (MDSU) 2 and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit (EODMU) 6, along with Naval History and Heritage Command and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are diving the Savannah River to salvage the Civil War ironclad CSS Georgia.

Final West Coast Frigate, USS Gary, Decommissioned — Past and current crew, plank owners, former and current commanding officers, namesake relatives and friends and family gathered at Naval Base San Diego July 23 to bid farewell to USS Gary (FFG 51), the last remaining Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided-missile frigate on the West coast after 31 years of service.

Navy Awards Environmental and Safety Excellence — Sailors, Marines and civilians gathered, July 23, at the Navy Memorial Heritage Center in Washington, D.C. to attend the Secretary of the Navy's annual Environmental and Safety Excellence Awards Ceremony. The awards recognize Navy and Marine Corps commands for their exceptional safety performance and environmental sterwardship during the previous year.

Undersea Rescue Command Completes ORE; U.S. Navy Returns to Deep Sea Rescue — Crew members from Undersea Rescue Command (URC) and contractors from Phoenix Holdings International (Phoenix) completed an operational readiness evaluation (ORE) July 19, re-certifying the Navy's deep sea submarine rescue capability. The submarine rescue system had undergone an extensive refurbishment period. The ORE, a component of crew certification, was the final step in a multistage process that enabled the URC-Phoenix team to become rescue-ready for worldwide submarine rescue.

Greenert on Second Chances at Prison TEDx Talk — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert spoke at a TEDx Talk inside the grounds of a state prison in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Greenert, a native of Butler, Pennsylvania, discussed accountability and second chances with 250 audience members at State Correctional Institution Pittsburgh Riverside Corrections Center.

ONR-Sponsored Technology Aids Recovery of Alaska Plane Wreck — Last month, several agencies used the Expeditionary Meteorology System, or XMET, developed with support from the Office of Naval Research (ONR), to monitor conditions at a 1952 crash site of a military transport aircraft in Alaska. The participating agencies exploring the site, located on a glacier, were the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, U.S. Air Force, Alaska Army National Guard and Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Science and Technology Help Navy Prepare for Future Arctic Operations — On July 14, Chief of Naval Research Rear Adm. Mat Winter was the Navy keynote speaker at the Sixth Symposium on the Impacts of an Ice-Diminishing Arctic on Maritime and Naval Operations. Winter discussed ONR's investments in Arctic science, stressing the importance of international partnership and science and technology diplomacy.

CNO Releases Annual Navigation Plan — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert on Monday released a document that highlights the U.S. Navy's intended track and investments for the next five fiscal years.

SAN DIEGO (April 17, 2015) The guided-missile frigate USS Gary (FFG 51) arrives at Naval Base San Diego after completing its final deployment before decomissioning. During the seven-month deployment Gary operated in the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet and U.S. 3rd Fleet areas of operations and played an integral role in Operation Martillo.
