What is the future of Artificial Intelligence & Robotics in the DON?
Background: On June 5, 2015 the Secretary of the Navy directed (Memo) the Chief of Naval Operations to begin efforts to accelerate the exploration of the emerging fields of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for support functions across the Department of the Navy.
Instructions: We want your thoughts and insights on what is possible over the next decade and beyond. As Secretary Mabus noted, "The private sector is investing heavily in AI and robotics automation for decision making and physical implementation tasks. The DON could benefit from considering how to adapt recent private sector advances in fields such as machine learning, natural language processing, ontological engineering, and automated planning for naval applications."
How and where can the DON benefit from these emerging fields? What other technologies need to be considered?
Time: The Hatch will remain open from 15 June to 15 July for the DON AI & Robotics Challenge and top ideas will feed into the AI & Robotics study group for consideration.
Given the aggressive timeline outlined in the memo, individual ideas may not receive feedback from the study group.
