Highlighting the “Cold Turkey” method of quitting tobacco and how quitting can impact fitness, Quit Tobacco – UCanQuit2.org celebrated the Great American Smokeout with a Cold Turkey Trot run/walk on November 24, 2015 at the Defense Health Agency headquarters in Falls Church, Va. Eighteen other military installations around the world also organized their own Cold Turkey Trots to observe the annual cessation event.
The Great American Smokeout (observed on the third Thursday of November) challenges smokers to quit smoking for just a day, with hope that being smoke-free for 24 hours will convince them to quit for good. Though quitting “cold turkey” is the most common way to quit tobacco, Quit Tobacco offers many online free resources to help service members and their family members quit tobacco.
UCanQuit2.org offers educational articles and news for those who are looking for more information on quitting and staying quit. The website also offers a live chat feature, an interactive quit plan – Ready2Quit – and a support locator. For daily messages of support, advice and tips, Quit Tobacco provides the SmokefreeMIL text-message support program to help you get ready and get through the weeks after you quit.
