Secretary Mabus Names Two Destroyers for Medal of Honor Recipients — In a ceremony at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium Sept. 17, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG 125, will be named Jack H. Lucas in honor of the Marine Corps hero and Medal of Honor recipient. Mabus also announced that DDG 126 would be named Louis H. Wilson Jr. in honor of the 26th commandant of the Marine Corps who was also a Medal of Honor recipient.

Navy Tests 100-percent Advanced Biofuel — Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus' energy vision came to fruition in September when the EA-18G "Green Growler" completed flight testing of a 100-percent advanced biofuel at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland. The U.S. Navy is a leader in incorporating alternative fuel into operational supplies, in order to increase mission capability and flexibility.

NROTC Returns to Brown University — The Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs and the president of Brown University held a ceremony at Sayles Hall on campus Sept. 16, restoring participation in the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program at Brown University.

Navy Celebrates 2016 Hispanic Heritage Month — The Navy joins the nation in celebrating the contributions of Hispanic Americans during Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15. This year, the theme "Embracing, Enriching, and Enabling America," represents Hispanic Americans walking together with those who share in the honor of calling this nation home.

Enduring Partnerships: Developed at the Sailor Level — Rear Adm. Cathal O’Connor, chief of staff of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa talks about the U.S. Navy’s operations, exercises and engagements abroad.

Oceanographer of the Navy Joins World Leaders in Support of Sustainable Fisheries — Oceanographer of the Navy Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet moderated a panel regarding the sustainment of fisheries around the world's oceans at a conference held today at the State Department attended by President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry and actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The panel, included fishery experts from around the world, who examined options that fishery management authorities may use to combat overfishing and mitigate adverse impacts on the broader marine environment.

Navy's Most Advanced Warship, USS Zumwalt Arrives in Norfolk — The Navy's newest and most technologically advanced surface ship, future USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) pulled into Naval Station Norfolk Wednesday for another port visit on the 3-month journey to its new homeport in San Diego. Crewed by 147 Sailors, Zumwalt is the lead ship of a class of next-generation multi-mission destroyers designed to strengthen naval power. They are capable of performing critical maritime missions and enhance the Navy's ability to provide deterrence, power projection and sea control.

Navy Conducts First Live Fire NIFC-CA Test with F-35 — The Navy hosted its first live fire demonstration to successfully test the integration of F-35 with existing Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA) architecture Sept. 12. During the test, an unmodified U.S. Marine Corps F-35B from the Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron (VMX) 1, based in Edwards Air Force Base, acted as an elevated sensor to detect an over-the-horizon threat. The aircraft then sent data through its Multi-Function Advanced Data Link to a ground station connected to USS Desert Ship (LLS-1), a land-based launch facility designed to simulate a ship at sea. Using the latest Aegis Weapon System Baseline 9.C1 and a Standard Missile 6, the system successfully detected and engaged the target.

Photographer Looks Back on 9/11 Memories — In the immediate aftermath of 9/11, one 30-year-old combat camera sailor took a photograph that leapt out of news coverage to deliver a needed jolt of hope: A huge American flag draped down the side of the damaged Pentagon. That sailor, Michael Pendergrass, is now 45 and retired from the Navy, but he recently revisited the Pentagon to discuss his experiences there with DoD News.

Lisa Franchetti, commander of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 9, and George Washington's color guard participate in a cake cutting ceremony during a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in the ship's mess decks. George Washington is deployed as a part of Southern Seas 2015. The eighth deployment of its kind, Southern Seas seeks to enhance interoperability, increase regional stability, and build and maintain regional relationships with countries throughout the region through joint multinational and interagency exchanges and cooperation.
