Naval Information Force Reserve IW TYCOM Visits Southeast
By Lt. Cmdr. Nicholas Carter, Naval Information Force Reserve - April 18, 2016
FORT MEADE, Md. — Commander, Naval Information Force Reserve (COMNAVIFORES), Rear Adm. Daniel J. MacDonnell, made a recent visit to NAVIFORES Region Southeast (SE) in Jacksonville, Florida, April 7-10.

NAVIFORES is the Type-Commander for the Reserve Information Warfare (IW) community. Through its six regional commands including Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest and Washington D.C., it is responsible to provide manning, training and equipping (MT&E) for Navy Reserve personnel.

MacDonnell, the immediate superior in command of all six NAVIFORES regions, inspected SE’s programs as part of a triennial quality inspection visit (QIV); held an all-hands event; and made flag calls with region and unit senior officers, junior officers, chief petty officers and civilian staff.

“It’s fantastic to see so many of our commanding officers, executive officers and senior enlisted leaders from the field taking an active role in the QIV,” said MacDonnell during his call with the senior officers. “Providing MT&E to our Reserve Sailors is critical as we continue to meet the demand signal of our active component commands. It’s all about delivering capability and taking care of our Sailors.”

Following the command assessment and flag events, NAVIFORES Region SE and Navy Reserve Joint Intelligence Center Central Command (NR JICCENT) 0274, one of the Reserve units for which the region is responsible, hosted a Navy Dining Out April 9 which was well attended by more than 150 Sailors and their guests.

NAVIFORES Region SE’s primary mission is mobilization readiness of 1,700 Selected Reserve (SELRES) Sailors assigned within the region’s 32 IW units and embedded IW Reservists across the region.

The geographic span of Region SE crosses 140 Navy Operational Support Units in the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas. In addition, the region provides oversight and management of three Navy-sponsored Joint Reserve Intelligence Centers (JRIC). There are a total of 27 JRICs across the nation, of which nine are hosted by the Navy.

The Navy Reserve IW Community is comprised of more than 7,200 SELRES officers and Sailors and 130 units. NR JICCENT 0274 is a sample of just one unit performing IW operations on drill weekends and throughout the week, in support of Navy, Joint and Department of Defense agencies in which IW commands provide cryptologic, information technology, intelligence, meteorological and space IW capabilities.
