CNO Talks Cooperation, Trust at Navies Conference — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson attended the 10th Regional Seapower Symposium (RSS) for the Navies of the Mediterranean and Black Sea Countries host by the Italian Navy in Venice, Italy Oct. 22. Richardson participated in a panel discussion which focused on the symposium's main theme, "Enhancing maritime security in the wider Mediterranean." The event included two sessions, the first focusing on the wider spectrum of maritime challenges, while the second focused on improving maritime security through dialogue and cooperation.

What the Navy is Doing Now to Remain Cybersecure — To protect against these threats the Navy has made significant changes, including how it is organized and how much it invests in cybersecurity.

Navy’s Strength Beneath the Sea – An Enduring Evolution — Submarines have lurked beneath the vast world waters for as long as the U.S. Navy’s 240-year existence. Albeit a mystical notion to some in the beginning, submarines are now capable of conducting a wide variety of missions including anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, land attack, intelligence gathering, mine reconnaissance, supporting special forces, and nuclear deterrence.

An Update from the Navy's Aviation Energy Conservation Program — Naval Aviation is part of the Secretary of the Navy's (SECNAV) Energy Conservation Program. The Aviation Energy Conservation (Air ENCON) Program is designed to optimize fuel consumption by naval aviation units-without adversely impacting safety or mission execution-to ensure the right amount of fuel is available for sustained mission readiness. Air ENCON focuses on operational awareness and practices that will conserve fuel and improve efficiency to not only protect finite resources, but to ensure warfighting capability.

Six Regional Commands Earn SECNAV Energy Awards — Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Energy) Joe Bryan visited six Hampton Roads-area commands Monday, Oct. 19, to present 2015 Secretary of the Navy Energy and Water Management awards to several commands and squadrons. Commands receiving awards included Naval Air Station Oceana; Strike Fighter Squadron 131 (VFA-131); Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 124 (VAW-124); Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 40 (VRC-40); Naval Station Norfolk and USS Mesa Verde (LPD-19).

Navy COOL Launches New Website — Navy Credentialing Opportunities On-line (COOL), a program providing Sailors a way to take the skills they have learned on the job and translate them into civilian credentials, introduced a new website Oct. 16.

Violating security best practices, circumventing security policies, carelessness and falling victim to social networking exploits opens the door to cyber adversaries who can exploit vulnerabilities which may directly impact our Navy's warfighting capability and potentially threaten our lives.

Navy's Last Coal-Fired Power Plant Decommissioned — The Navy's last coal-fired power plant was decommissioned during a ceremony held Oct. 23 at Naval Support Facility (NSF) Indian Head, Md. The Honorable Dennis V. McGinn, assistant secretary of the Navy, Energy, Installations and Environment, was the guest speaker.

Four Navy Ships Celebrate 20 Years in October — Four ships are celebrating 20-year anniversaries this month, all commissioned in October 1995. They include coastal patrol ship Thunderbolt (PC 12), submarine Columbia (SSN 771), and a pair of destroyers, Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and Stethem (DDG 63).

U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (Oct. 10, 2015) An F/A-18F Super Hornet assigned to the Red Rippers of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11 launches from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). Theodore Roosevelt is deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, strike operations in Iraq and Syria as directed, maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the region. The United States 48-star national flag flown on USS Pirate (AM 275), circa 1950. The flag went down when USS Pirate struck a mine and sank Oct. 12, 1950, but showed up in an anonymous package sent to the ship’s former commanding officer two years later.
