Here's Looking at You: ONR Tests New Glasses — Marines were able to turn a lush golf course into a hostile battleground complete with tanks, mortar fire and smoke at a demonstration on May 21 using an augmented reality training system from the Office of Naval Research (ONR). At Marine Corps Base Quantico in Quantico, Virginia, the Augmented Immersive Team Trainer (AITT) moved one step closer to its ultimate goal of giving warfighters glasses that can be worn to enhance augmented reality training scenarios.
National Museum Showcases DoD's Communicators of Excellence Awards — The Department of Defense Communicators of Excellence Awards marked an historic moment for DoD professional communicators with the first-ever museum exhibit devoted entirely to COE winners at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, Quantico, Virginia, which concludes May 31. The COE exhibit at the NMMC recognizes 36 works from the military's best photographers and graphic artists for work they completed while serving on various missions across the globe in 2014. The COE Awards started with the Military Photographer of the Year in 1960 and developed into four separate competitions aimed at recognizing, rewarding and promoting excellence among military photographers, videographers, journalists and graphic artists.

USS America Completes Deperming Evolution —The amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) completed a magnetic treatment, known as deperming, at Naval Base Point Loma Magnetic Silencing Facility (MSF) May 21. Deperming reduces the ship's magnetic signature by flashing the ship's hull with electricity in order to help avoid detection and to minimize marine mine attraction to the steel hull.
Naval War College Holds First Capstone War Game of its Kind — A group of 66 naval officers representing 48 nations participated in the inaugural Naval Staff College (NSC) war game, May 15, at the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, Rhode Island. The new war game was designed to test naval strategy and tactics in a simulated environment and, for the first time, incorporate learning objectives from the entire academic year.

The observance included performances by Navy Band Northeast, New York Scottish Pipes and Drums; a wreath-laying ceremony; and remarks from Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV), Ray Mabus; New York City Attorney Gen. Eric T. Schneiderman; Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer; Rear Adm. Linda Fagan, commander, 1st Coast Guard District; and noted military historian David J. Ulbrich, Ph.D.
MCPON Commemorates Fallen Service Members on Memorial Day — Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens spoke at a ceremony honoring fallen service members at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial in Virginia Beach, Va. on May 25. The ceremony was attended by the mayor of Virginia Beach, William Sessoms, veterans, service members, family members and residents of the Hampton Roads area. MCPON spoke about the significance of Memorial Day and what it means to honor those who have died serving their country.
