SECNAV Releases Updated Diversity, Inclusion Policy Statement — Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Ray Mabus issued an updated Department of the Navy Diversity and Inclusion Policy statement, Feb. 25, and met with several key military service organizations, veterans service organizations, and stakeholders at the Pentagon to discuss the topic. The meeting was the first in a planned series of engagements during which Mabus will discuss Navy and Marine Corps issues with leaders in the civilian and military communities.
CNO, MCPON Engage Norfolk Sailors — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens visited Sailors and toured naval activities in Norfolk, Feb. 24. During a tour of BAE Systems Ship Repair Norfolk, CNO met with company leaders, shipbuilders repair personnel and Sailors repair to discuss current shipyard opportunities and challenges.
Navy Announces 2016 Navy Week Schedule — From Phoenix to Baton Rouge, America's Navy will come home to 15 cities across the country in 2016 as part of the Navy Week program. Navy Weeks, coordinated by the Navy Office of Community Outreach (NAVCO), are designed to give Americans the opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity.
NROTC Midshipmen Surface Warfare Officers Select First Ships — More than 280 Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) midshipmen at 70 colleges and universities around the country chose their first ships of their Navy career February 23-25. Ship selection is one of the most significant events for midshipmen as they take their first step toward joining the U.S. Navy surface warfare officer (SWO) community in the fleet.
Navy Announces Winners of Fiscal Year 2015 CNO Environmental Awards — Vice Adm. Phil Cullom, deputy chief of naval operations for fleet readiness and logistics (N4), announced 29 winners for the fiscal year (FY) 2015 Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Environmental Awards competition in a naval message on Feb. 22. The CNO Environmental Awards is an annual recognition program that highlights the accomplishments of nominated ships, installations, and individuals for exceptional achievements in environmental stewardship.
Building Wealth, Reducing Debt: Military Saves Week — 'Make Saving Automatic!' is the theme for this year's "Military Saves Week," which kicked off this week with a proclamation signing at the Washington Navy Yard, Feb. 22. Partnered with the Department of Defense Financial Readiness Campaign, this week is an opportunity for installations and organizations to promote good savings habits and a chance for service members and their families to assess their own saving status. The program focuses on helping service members achieve their financial goals by providing savings advice, financial tools and resources, and motivation.
Sailors, Coast Guardsmen Gather at 2016 Wounded Warrior Pacific Trials — The 2016 Wounded Warrior Pacific Trials brought together 50 seriously ill and injured Sailors and Coast Guardsmen, from all over the United States, for competitive adaptive sports and recreation, Feb. 20, in Pearl Harbor. The trials are hosted by Commander, Navy Region Hawaii and Navy Wounded Warrior-Safe Harbor (NWW) - a Navy Installations Command-supported program.
Research Vessel Sally Ride Completes Builder's Trials — The Navy's Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research Vessel (AGOR), R/V Sally Ride (AGOR 28), successfully completed Builder's Trials, Feb. 21, off the coast of Anacortes. Builder's Trials for Sally Ride tested various shipboard systems and ensured readiness prior to conducting Acceptance Trials with the U.S. Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey. The propulsion system, mission-over-the-side handling equipment, anchor handling system, and work/rescue boat launch system were among the systems successfully demonstrated.
Naval History Makes Philadelphia Ideal Location to Recognize Exemplary STEM Personnel — The 11th annual "Stars and Stripes" dinner and awards program and the 30th annual Black Engineer of the Year Award STEM conference were held, Feb. 19, in Philadelphia, recognizing top-performing African-American military and civilian leaders in the armed forces. Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Bill Moran served as keynote speaker at the event which was hosted by the U.S. Navy this year.
Navy Voluntary Education Recognized by Council of College, Military Educators — Navy Voluntary Education (VOLED) was honored with the President's Award for exemplary service from the Council of College and Military Educators (CCME) at their annual symposium Feb. 16-18. Capt. Lee Newton, commanding officer of the Naval Education and Training Professional Development and Technology Center (NETPDTC) received the award from Jeff Cropsey, president of CCME.
