Navy's 2015 Top Language Professionals Award Winners Announced — Navy announced the 2015 fiscal year language professional award winners, April 21. The annual awards are given to recognize the top military and civilian language professionals and the top Command Language Program that have achieved mission success through the use of foreign language.

DON CIO Awards Recognize Information Management and Information Technology Excellence — Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer (DON CIO) Robert Foster recognized more than 10 individuals and teams for transforming the Navy and Marine Corps through information technology during a ceremony at the Washington E. Walter Convention Center April 20.

Energy Saving LED Lights Replacing Old Costly Sodium Bulbs — Naval Support Activity Naples is replacing outdated high pressure sodium bulbs in street lamps this week with solid-state lighting (SSL) as one of many efforts at the base to reduce energy-related costs at the installation.

SPAWAR Contracting Team Awarded for Performance-Based Licensing Structure Innovation — The National Contract Management Association has awarded a Space and Naval Warfare System Command contracting team the Innovation in Contracting Award for implementing a performance-based licensing structure. The team will accept the award in July during the NCMA World Congress.

NHHC Leads Discussions during Annual Meeting of Society for Military History — Historians of the Naval History and Heritage Command participated in the 83rd annual meeting of the Society for Military History April 14-17. The four-day conference allowed for college and university professors, historians of federal agencies, independent scholars and military officers to discuss how borders and boundaries — geographic, political or conceptual — are important to the study of military history.

John P Murtha First Ship to Successfully Test New Technology Afloat — Sailors aboard the Pre-Commissioning Unit John P. Murtha (LPD 26) successfully tested the Navy's first High Frequency Distribution Amplifier Group (HF DAG) system during Builder's Sea Trials March 1-3 and Acceptance Sea Trials April 13-15 in the Gulf of Mexico. During these trials, the HF DAG system successfully transmitted and received transmissions between LPD 26 antennas and established contact with other vessels, such as the USS Montgomery (LCS 8) afloat.

First Phase Unmanned Aviation on CVN Complete — USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) marked a historical milestone April 13 after installing the first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) command center aboard an aircraft carrier. Capt. Beau Duarte, program manager of Unmanned Carrier Aviation program office (PMA-268), inspected the site and recognized Carl Vinson Sailors instrumental in the security, logistics and installation of the UAV suite.

Navy's Underwater Archeology Team Assists with Assessment of Historic Ship Remains — When archaeologists needed assistance after discovering the remains of an 18th century ship buried in Alexandria they only had to look across the Potomac River for a team of underwater specialists. The Naval History and Heritage Command's Underwater Archaeology Branch (UAB) assisted city archaeologists with measuring and recording the excavated timbers at a warehouse in Alexandria April 12-16.

Cybersecurity Competition Boosts Student Interest in STEM Careers — The fourth annual Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition (PCDC), hosted by Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SSC) Atlantic in collaboration with the South Carolina Lowcountry Chapter of AFCEA, was held April 9-11 at Trident Technical College in North Charleston, South Carolina. The goal of the PCDC is to energize South Carolina high school and collegiate students to focus on the development of technical skills in networking and cyber security.
