The Battle Axe is Passed: CVW-3 Change of Command — The "Battle Axe" of Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 3 changed hands during a ceremony aboard the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) in the Red Sea, Dec. 2. Capt. Marc Miguez relieved Capt. Jeffrey Anderson as commander of CVW-3 during the ceremony, which was held in the Ike commanding officer's in-port cabin.
USNA Midshipmen Hold 26th Annual Giving Tree Ceremony — The United States Naval Academy and the Salvation Army held the 26th annual Giving Tree lighting ceremony Nov. 29 in the rotunda of Bancroft Hall. Each year, midshipmen from 6th Company decorate the tree with paper angel ornaments which contain the age, gender, and gift wish list of a child in need from the greater Annapolis area. The midshipmen, as well as faculty and staff, are encouraged to take an angel from the tree and purchase a holiday gift for the child the ornament represents.
George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group Begins COMPTUEX — The George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group (GHWBCSG) departed Norfolk to begin Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) Nov. 28. COMPTUEX is a robust test combining technology, training, and tactics into multiple scenarios leading to certification for deployment.
Navy Releases Official Logo for 75th Anniversary of WWII — The Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) released a logo to kick off its commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the U.S. Navy's experiences in World War II, officials announced Nov. 29.
SECNAV Visits with Sailors at Naval Air Station Sigonella — Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus visited Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella and held an all-hands call with Sailors at the NAS II hangar, Nov. 28. Following his remarks, Mabus fielded questions from the audience. At the top of many Sailors' minds was the recent announcement of the Navy Occupational Specialty Rating Modernization Plan, and how the new plan would affect manning.
U.S.-Japan Mine Countermeasures Units Conduct Mine Countermeasures Exercise — USS Chief (MCM 14) and members of Mine Countermeasures Squadron (MCMRON) 7 staff joined Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) MCM units for combined operations in the final phases of the bilateral mine countermeasures exercise (MCMEX) 3JA, Nov. 24-28.
NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support Celebrates National American Indian Heritage Month — NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support (NAVSUP WSS) held a National American Indian Heritage Month Program for military and civilian personnel Nov. 22 in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Ms. Lynn Kohl, Vice Commander, NAVSUP WSS, spoke about the theme for National American Indian Heritage Month observance in her opening remarks. "The theme of this year's observance, Serving Our Nations, was chosen by the Society of American Indian Government Employees to highlight the contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives to the progress and success of their tribal nations, as well as the United States."
Mentoring the Navy's Future — Sailors are told to cut out their own path, but they are encouraged not to do it all alone either. Participating in the mentorship program as a mentor and protégé encourages Sailors to help and learn from one another and to push each other to reach their full potential. USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) (Ike) allows Sailors the opportunity to choose who they want as a mentor in and out of their field and to receive mentorship for their career and their personal life.
