US 6th Fleet/Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO Welcomes New Commander — Vice Adm. James Foggo III turned over command of U.S. 6th Fleet and Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO to Vice Adm. Christopher W. Grady, during a change of command ceremony at Naval Support Activity Naples, Oct. 28. Presiding at the change of command ceremony was Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/Allied Joint Force Command Naples Adm. Michelle Howard. In her remarks, Howard praised Foggo's leadership throughout Europe and welcomed Grady to region.
USNA Breaks Ground at New Cyber Security Studies Center to Prepare Future Navy Cyber Warriors — The U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new $106-million Center for Cyber Security Studies Oct. 21. Three hundred people attended the event, including academy officials, Navy leaders and members of the Maryland delegation, U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski and U.S. Representatives John Sarbanes and C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger.
U.S. Marine Corps, Constellation, P&G collaborate to achieve Navy's first 'Net Zero' energy military base — Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) has awarded a $170 million, 23-year energy savings performance contract to Constellation, a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, for an energy conservation and distributed generation project that will enable the Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) in Albany, Georgia, to reduce energy use, increase energy security, and meet energy demands from renewable sources.
History-Making Ribbon Cutting at Naval School of Music — The only military music training facility in the U.S., the Naval School of Music (NAVSOM), marked a major milestone with the completion of a major renovation and rehearsal annex Oct. 25 during a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLCFS). The $15 million project began January 2013 and was completed three years later in January.
Submarine Force Looking for Enlisted Women — The Enlisted Women in Submarine Task Force hosted a recruitment and conversion brief at Lockwood Hall Sept. 29. The recruitment for this cycle of applicants comes on the heels of successful integration of female officers and senior enlisted Sailors onboard submarines that started in 2010.
Navy Foreign Language Opportunities Announced — The Navy Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (LREC) office is highlighting several new opportunities for Sailors looking to exercise their language skills and expand expertise across the service. Navy is requesting four to six Sailors who will participate in the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center standard setting panel for the German language. This panel will be held Nov. 1-4 in Crystal City, Virginia.
Scouting for an Experience — Few experience life with a complete sense of wonderment. Childhood is a fleeting part of a person's life, but that short span is when some moments are enjoyed to the fullest. Often, moments get taken for granted as we get older. For the boys of Cub Scout Pack 1967 and Boy Scout Troops 697 and 516, spending a day touring aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) and other points of interest around Naval Station Norfolk, gave them an up-close and personal experience on how Sailors in the Navy live and work.
