This memo directs Navy activities to be proactive with regards to complying with the Privacy Act of 1974 and SECNAVINST 5211.5 series, DON Privacy Program. The memo provides Privacy Act coordinators good general guidance and addresses areas that are still important today, i.e., protecting personally identifiable information, reducing the use of Social Security numbers, the proper marking of documents containing PII, system of records notices, training and identity theft.
