Navy to Christen Sixth Joint High Speed Vessel — The Navy will christen the future joint high speed vessel USNS Brunswick (JHSV 6) May 9 during a 10 a.m. CDT ceremony in Mobile, Alabama. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus will deliver the ceremony's principal address. Alma B. "Lee" Booterbaugh will serve as the ship's sponsor. Named for a seaport city located on the southeast coast of Georgia, Brunswick is the fourth ship to bear the name.
IDC is Committed to Cross-Detailing — Cross-detailing may be new to Naval Oceanography, but it has been a practice of the Information Dominance Corps (IDC) since inception in 2009 in order to provide cross-discipline exposure to IDC officers and integration of the IDC. The practice follows one common in the Navy's aviation community that has air wing commanders assigned to command platforms different than their aviation platform community of origin. So far that IDC integration has seen the establishment of enlisted and officer warfare qualifications, officer assignments to commands outside their communities and establishment of the new type command - NAVIDFOR.
ONR Engineer Receives Prestigious Aerospace Award — Dr. Thomas Beutner of the Office of Naval Research (ONR) was named a fellow by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) at a May 6 gala. He joins a community that includes iconic figures like aviation pioneer Orville Wright, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and astronomer Carl Sagan. Beutner, applauded for his distinguished aerospace career, leads ONR's Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Department and is responsible for science and technology programs in aircraft, air and surface weapons technology.
Navy to Hold Sundown Ceremony for SH-60B Sea Hawk Helicopter — Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Pacific is scheduled to host a Sundown Ceremony for the SH-60B Sea Hawk helicopter at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California, May 11 at 3:30 p.m. The Sundown Ceremony will commemorate 30 years of active service for the SH-60B.The SH-60B joined the operational fleet in 1985 when the aircraft made its initial deployment with a Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 43 detachment aboard the guided-missile frigate USS Crommelin (FFG 37).
DEPSECDEF Loads HVP on Test Range, Observes Repetitive Rate Electromagnetic Railgun's Commissioning Series — Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work visited the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) to thank service members and civilians, and to observe the live fire of the 5-inch, 62-caliber open mount test gun; the MK 45 Mod 4 gun system; and the electromagnetic railgun. He also highlighted the Defense Innovation Initiative, a DoD-wide effort to sustain and advance America's military dominance for the 21st century, and emphasized the importance of investing in innovation, reforming the defense enterprise, and maintaining U.S. technological superiority.
Trailblazers in Naval Diving Return to Dive School — Some of the Navy's first women divers returned to Panama City, Florida, May 8 where they got their training. Thirteen members of the Women Divers Hall of Fame, some of them former Navy divers, participated in tours of commands on board the Naval Support Activity Panama City, including the Naval Diving and Salvage Training Center (NDSTC). The center is leading the commemoration of the Year of the Military Diver (YOTMD) events.
Historic Seoul Navy Club Closes Doors after Four Decades of Service — The Navy Club in Seoul closed its doors for the last time on May 7, following a disestablishment ceremony held on U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Yongsan. Rear Adm. Lisa Franchetti, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea (CNFK), hosted the ceremony and spoke to former employees and ceremony guests on the important role the historic restaurant played with Sailors and their family members. More than 100 service members, civilian employees and invited guests attended the ceremony, which included a presentation of awards to employees, remarks from Navy Club Director Randy Quimby, a cake cutting and reception.
Sailors from USS The Sullivans Visit Hometown of Ship's Namesake — As part of the Navy Week Program, USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) Sailors visited the Sullivan brothers’ hometown.
Final Flight of the East Coast P-3C Orion — The Patrol Squadron (VP) 26 "Tridents," based out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, are currently conducting missions in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. This is the Navy's final active duty deployment of the P-3C Orion aircraft from the East Coast. The Navy is in the process of replacing the decades-old Lockheed Martin P-3C turbo-prop aircraft with the new multi-mission maritime aircraft P-8A Poseidon, a modified Boeing 737-800ERX.
