SSC Pacific’s CERF Group Named as Team SPAWAR Innovation Award Winners
By Patric Petrie, SSC Pacific Public Affairs - December 18, 2014
SAN DIEGO — Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific’s (SSC Pacific) Cryogenic Exploitation of Radio Frequency (CERF) Team has been selected to receive the 2013 Team SPAWAR Innovation Award in the Science & Technology Product, Process or Service Category.

The CERF Team was recognized for designing, developing and transitioning the use of cryogenic temperatures to enhance components in the radio frequency (RF) receiver chain. The use of cryogenic cooling benefits the warfighter by improving a receiver's sensitivity, selectivity, linearity and accuracy which provides an improved ability to hear signals.

The CERF Team has designed an innovative approach to both a technology system and a procurement process that creates an effective "bridge" across the "Valley of Death," resulting in an expedited and sustained transition of enhanced capabilities to the warfighter.

Technologies for the various devices in the RF receiver chain exist at different technology readiness levels, so this process provides a clear transition path for components as they mature. Cryogenic signal intelligence is a "game changing" technology for maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
