'101 Critical Days of Summer' Campaign Begins at NDW — The Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and with higher temperatures and winter in the rearview mirror, Naval District Washington (NDW) personnel should take time to consider the safety aspects of this busy time of year. That's where the "101 Critical Days of Summer" campaign comes in to play.

USS Rushmore Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Ship's Commissioning — The crew of dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47) celebrated the ship's 25th commissioning anniversary with a cake cutting ceremony and barbeque while in a maintenance availability period, June 1.

Registration Now Open for the 2016 Joint Women's Leadership Symposium; CNP to Give Keynote Address — The Sea Services Leadership Association (SSLA) announced that the 29th annual Joint Women's Leadership Symposium (JWLS) is now open for registration and will feature Chief of Naval Personnel, Vice Adm. Robert Burke, as a keynote speaker on the conference's second day.

High School Classmates Reunite for Promotion — At an intimate ceremony held in the Pentagon, Adm. Michelle Howard promoted her high school classmate, Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey Jacobson, to the rank of commander May 27. Jacobson, a Core Plus facilitator at Chaplains Religious Enrichment Development Operation (CREDO) Naval District Washington and Howard, the 38th vice chief of naval operations (VCNO), were classmates at Gateway High School in Aurora, Colorado. They both graduated in 1978.

U.S. Navy Promotes Energy, Environment during Fleet Week New York — U.S. Fleet Forces Command's "Stewards of the Sea: Defending Freedom, Protecting the Environment" static exhibit was showcased during Fleet Week New York aboard amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5), in Manhattan, Times Square, the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and New Jersey's Liberty State Park.

Partnership Celebration Provides Glimpse into the Future of Ocean Surveying — Members of the naval oceanography community and relatives of the "Father of Modern Oceanography" peered into the future of ocean surveying while paying homage to their history during a partnership celebration held alongside USNS Maury (T-AGS 66) in Pascagoula, Mississippi May 31.

Fleet Week Service Members Honor Women's Wartime Contributions during Remembrance Celebration — Sailors and Marines attached to the USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), and Coast Guardsmen stationed at Fort Wadsworth participated in the annual Neighborhood Remembrance Day Celebration at Lake Cemetery in support of Fleet Week New York (FWNY), May 28.

Operation Cookie Drop Comes to Bataan for Fleet Week — More than 55 Girl Scouts and troop leaders from the Heart of Hudson Council arrived on the Wasp-class multipurpose amphibious assault ship USS Bataan (LHD 5) with boxes of cookies for Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen as part of Operation Cookie Drop during Fleet Week New York, May 28.

Sea Service Members Reenlisted During A Joint Ceremony At The 9/11 Memorial — Sailors and Marines were promoted and reenlisted during a joint ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City during 2016 Fleet Week New York (FWNY), May 27. Adm. Phil Davidson, Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, administered the oath of enlistment and oath of office for the service members as they stood on the sacred site.

Biennial Symposium Advances Naval Mine Warfare — Naval leaders, industry experts and guests from 12 countries converged for the 12th International Mine Warfare (MIW) Technology Symposium held at the Embassy Suites hotel in Seaside, California, May 24-26. The three-day, biennial symposium is the only Navy-sponsored event solely focused on naval mine warfare and associated technologies with the theme, "Expeditionary Mine Warfare: Mine Countermeasures, Naval Mining, and Unmanned Systems."

The Navy employs every means available to mitigate the potential environmental effects of our activities without jeopardizing the safety of our Sailors or impacting our Navy readiness mission.
