UK Delegates Deepen Cooperation, Partnerships Aboard Ronald Reagan —The U.S. Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), hosted nine officials from the United Kingdom (U.K.), Jan. 8. Rear Adm. John Alexander, commander, Battle Force 7th Fleet, and Capt. Brett Crozier, Ronald Reagan's executive officer, welcomed aboard the Right Honourable (Rt. Hon.) Philip Hammond, Member of Parliament (MP), Secretary of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, the Rt. Hon. Michael Fallon MP, Secretary of State for Defence, and other delegates, and held a press conference on the ship's flight deck.

DON, Duke Energy Sign Lease to Establish Solar Footprint in Indiana —The Department of the Navy (DON) and Duke Energy signed a real estate out grant to develop a 24 megawatt (MW) direct current (DC) (17 MW alternating current) solar facility on base at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Crane, Indiana. The facility will be one of the largest in Indiana.

CNO, MCPON in Cradle of Naval Aviation to Tour Training Commands, USS Independence — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens visited commands onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola Jan. 6-7. The visit served to provide the senior leaders an overview of aviation training, as well as an opportunity to tour the littoral combat ship USS Independence (LCS 2). The ship is operating out of the station while the crew conducts operational evaluation and testing of the mine countermeasures mission package.

Navy Language, Regional Expertise and Culture Tools Go Mobile — The Navy Center for Language, Regional Expertise, and Culture (CLREC) announced the launch of a mobile application for training products and working aids, Jan. 6. Hosted by Joint Knowledge Online (JKO) Mobile, CLREC's app allows authorized users to access language, regional expertise and culture (LREC) materials on the go.

CNO Releases 'A Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority' — Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson released 'A Design for Maintaining Maritime Superiority,' Jan. 5, a document that addresses how the Navy will adapt to changes in the security environment and continue to fulfill its mission.

NRL Tests Cooperative Soaring Concept for Sustained Flight of UAV Sailplanes — The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), in collaboration with the Air Vehicle Intelligence and Autonomy (AVIA) Lab at Pennsylvania State University (PSU), completed testing of cooperative autonomous soaring algorithms used to keep unmanned sailplanes aloft for sustained flight durations - demonstrating the concept of shared soaring data between two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in flight. During the weeks of Sept. 28 and Oct. 26, the team launched 23 flights over a nine-day period resulting in more than 30 hours of combined flight.

Naval Academy Midshipman Receives Inaugural Stephen Decatur Award — U.S. Naval Academy quarterback Midshipman 1st Class Keenan Reynolds accepted the White House Historical Association's inaugural Stephen Decatur Award, Jan. 5, at the Historic Decatur House in Washington, D.C. The award was named in honor of War of 1812 hero Commodore Stephen Decatur Jr., and presented on his 237th birthday. It recognizes a young leader in the country who embodies the ideals of honor, courage and commitment set forth by Decatur during the formative years of the United States Navy.

NHRC Scientists Receive Award for Transforming a Rehabilitation Tool to Prevent Injury, Promote Resilience — The National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA) recognized scientists from Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) with the Outstanding Achievement in Modeling and Simulation (Cross-Function) award Dec. 1. NHRC's Physiological and Cognitive Operational Research Environment (PhyCORE) team was honored for their work in expanding a virtual reality walking and balance-based rehabilitation tool for injured warfighters into one now capable of promoting injury prevention and resilience.
